Artist Richard Farrington was commissioned in 1990 to produce the three sculptures, which include a large metal fish, an unusual marker post and a large metal ring. The large metal fish represents the local fishing industry. The unusual marker post is a two-metre high sculpture with four shapes attached representing earth, air, sky and water. The ring (also known as the Circle or Bracelet) stands on its edge with 10 charms suspended from the top. Each charm is a three dimensional image representing a story of local culture, tradition or folklore. Debate continues as to which stories they specifically represent... you might even have some ideas of your own!
Each sculpture is made from steel, which reflects the historic importance of the local smelting and metal-working industries.
Saltburn itself is a charming seaside resort with Victorian heritage and a fascinating dark history of smuggling. More recently it has established a stylish and upbeat reputation, spurred on by a wealth of creative arts, delicious restaurants and delicatessens, summer surfing and other exciting water sports.
